Holistic aromatherapy is both a body and mind approach to healing. A holistic viewpoint looks to essential oils to help address the causes of a minor medical or psychological imbalance, instead of just the symptoms. At its core, aromatherapy is a holistic complementary therapy, which involves the application of essential oils, extracts and hydrosols from aromatic plants to the body, in order to restore or enhance health, beauty and well being.
One way to place Aromatherapy within the context of complementary and alternative therapies is to view it as part of the larger field of herbal medicine and phytotherapy since the essential oils that are used in aromatherapy are derived from plants. Aromatherapy can help the body to regulate functions, normalize and balance, thus allowing the body to operate optimally. In holistic healing, aromatherapy seeks to attack the underlying cause of disease or imbalance, not to simply treat the symptoms. Emotional and spiritual imbalances can create physical symptoms. Additionally, essential oils have a regulating effect on the body’s own defense mechanisms and can have preventative effects on the immune system, providing further protection from imbalance. It is well known that when the body feels good, the immune system is further protected while stress, lack of sleep and depression can lead to weakened immune responses. It stands to reason that if aromatherapy makes one feel better, regardless of how and why, it will have a positive effect overall. Aromatherapy can address all aspects of an individual making it an ideal adjunct complementary therapy for any modality, or as a stand alone therapy.
At Grateful Aromatics, we believe that Aromatherapy is a Holistic practice and modality that works best in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.
